Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

The candidate must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

• read and correctly interpreted 1 work order and manufacturers’ instructions for repair and modification of removable prostheses, and used standard precautions and safe work practices for constructing repairs and modification for a maxillary or mandibular denture with a combination of the following:

- replace, add or modify new or existing artificial teeth

- replace, add or modifying new or existing metallic components

- modify the denture base

• critically evaluated the 1 repaired or modified denture produced to meet technical laboratory and patient requirements, including confirming that the repaired or modified denture:

- is compliant with the work order

- is free from defects

- is suitable for insertion in the mouth.

The candidate must demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role. This includes knowledge of:

• Australian/New Zealand Standards, workplace health and safety (WHS) policies, Dental Board of Australia guidelines on infection control, Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation and organisation policies relating to dental laboratory work

• fundamental oral anatomy including:

- dentition – arrangement of the teeth, naming and coding of teeth

- structures of the oral cavity – hard and soft palate, lateral and posterior borders of the oral cavity, tongue and floor of the mouth

- teeth form and function

• constructional faults that cause fractures of denture base including:

- absence of balanced occlusion

- inadequate polymerisation times and temperatures

- incorrect dough consistency when packing

- incorrect positioning of maxillary posterior teeth

- insufficient thickness of acrylic resin in the anterior palatal region of the denture

- rapid cooling after processing
